Good communication is about getting your message across clearly so that the receiver gets an unambiguous understanding of what was communicated. When we communicate, sender and receiver often communicate differently, which can impede the receiver’s reception and understanding. However, as a sender it is your responsibility that the message is received and understood. Poor communication or no communication at all causes disagreements and misunderstandings.
Who
You don’t always say what you think you said. You say it plus something more. And the receiver decides if you said what you think you said. There is an understandable wish to focus on oral communication, but the majority of communicative exchanges are actually unspoken. Therefore, it is crucial that you are conscious of what you say, how you say it and which signals your body sends when you are communicating with other people.
What
People & Performance train you in communication skills and equip you to handle:
- Oral communication – what is being said
- Extra oral communication – how it is said
- Non-oral communication – body language and external signals such as clothes and attitude
